For better or worse I’ve decided to nominate as a candidate for Vice-President/President Elect of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). If successful I would be Vice-President for 12 months from May 2009 and then President from May 2010. Nominations for two ALIA Board positions and VP/President elect close tomorow (15 January) afternoon at 5pm AEST.
I’ve been a member of ALIA since I graduated from the then Canberra CAE, now University of Canberra, in 1980. I’ve pretty much been active in ALIA and other professional interests since about 1990. In nominating I’ve needed to provide a statement of professional concerns as well as some candidate information. Below are the statements I provided with my nomination.
Statement of Professional Concerns
The impacts of the global downturn could be significant for us as individuals and for libraries and the library profession. It is important that ALIA demonstrates leadership in its own right, and collectively with other like minded organizations in addressing significant and complex societal issues that arise and challenge the Association’s objects and values. It is equally important for ALIA to continue to foster leadership within its own ranks through its various activities. IFLA 76 in Brisbane in 2010 provides us with an opportunity for ALIA to demonstrate its leadership and that of its dynamic membership to the library world.
